Rainbows to Brownies
Moving from Rainbows to Brownies can seem a little daunting − but it neednt be! At Rainbows your daughter has had fun, made new friends, played games and taken part in all sorts of exciting activities − and joining Brownies is just a continuation of the fun and adventure!
Top tips:
- Ask your daughters Rainbow Leader about the Brownie units nearby and about what they do.
- Ask your Rainbow Leader if she can arrange for you and your daughter (or your daughter and her Rainbow Leader) to visit a meeting of the local Brownie unit so you can both get a better idea of what to expect.
- Many Brownie units have lists of girls waiting to join and you are encouraged to get your daughters name on the list as soon as possible. Being a Rainbow does not necessarily mean that your daughter will automatically have a place at Brownies. Ask your Rainbow Leader how to go about this in your area.
With so many girls on lists waiting to join us across the UK, we always welcome any help from parents! Just one more Brownie Unit Helper can enable up to eight more girls to join guiding, or you can assist in other ways which will enable more girls to join. Ask the Leader in your new area about the many different ways you can help out.
Age requirements:
- The minimum age at which a girl may join Brownies is after her seventh birthday.
- A Rainbow will usually transfer to Brownies within six months of her seventh birthday.
- The age of transfer is flexible, with the emphasis on the girls being ready and happy to make the transfer.
- The recommended time for a girl to spend in Rainbows is two years (three in Northern Ireland only).

Top tips:
- Get your daughter to ask her Guide Leader about the Senior Section units nearby and what they do.
- Your daughter can ask her Guide Leader if a visit can be arranged to a nearby Senior Section unit, so she can get a better idea of what to expect.

Its important for your daughter to find a unit she feels comfortable with − she should talk to her Guide Leader about what kind of unit she would prefer to be part of.
