An introduction to International Guiding

By Su Hassall, International Commissioner

Many people feel inspired to travel because of someone they have met. Maybe a fellow Leader has told you about their recent trip overseas? Perhaps you have talked to someone who has taken part in a GOLD project that sounds right up your street? Or maybe you’ve attended an international camp in the UK and met a group of Russian Guides and now you want to see how guiding works in Russia for yourself?

However the travel bug has got you, there are lots of opportunities open to our members to take part in the international programme. More and more we are encouraging units to travel abroad. There is a grant to encourage units to travel overseas for the first time. Counties and Countries and Regions are finding ways of opening up opportunities to more members than just a few select trips. Your Country/Region may be running a supported overseas event which you can take part in, gain experience and feel supported before taking your unit overseas independently. And whenever we find out about an overseas camp or other trip we’ll advertise it on the website and pass it on to your International Advisers.

As well as travelling overseas there are lots of activities to do in the unit which foster global education. These don’t just have to happen on World Thinking Day either! The Right Now resource and Change the World programmes are two great ways to develop global awareness with your girls.

So what are you going to do internationally?
